I Call Foul!!!

The News Journal today published an op-ed piece by one of my Primary Election opponents, Karen Hartley-Nagle. There are many issues with her writing as she leans far to the Bush administration fearmongering side. That is not the reason to call FOUL.

FOUL is called for the newspapers loose journalistic reporting as she is called the "Democratic candidate for Congress." In fact there are three people in a Democratic Party Primary Election scheduled for September 9. On that date the candidate for U.S. Congress will be chosen by the voters, not by the News Journal editorial board.

A retraction and an apology had best be in the offing. This is journalistic failure of the worst degree. The newspaper may or may not favor one candidate over another but to promote any candidate in such a blatant way is unforgiveable.

We need a new direction in our nation as a whole these days. The News Journal would do well to take the same ideals and work for journalistic excellence as opposed to this sort of sloppy work.

Peace.

Foul, foul, foul. I am angry and disappointed beyond measure this morning. No word from the newspaper at this time in spite of my objections sent to them already.

Peace, Jerry

Jerry,

I wonder if K H-N actually helped herself with this OP-ED.

There are, indeed, so "many issues with her writing" (apart from the fear mongering), that I suspect would cause many readers to not finish the article; thereby missing the News Journal's "sloppy work".

That's how it happened for me;...

Every cloud.....

Jerry, you are right to be angry about this. It's very poor journalism. And I'd be mad not just about the assertion that she is the only candidate, but also, I would ask, have you been offered the opportunity to write an op-ed? Have you asked and been denied?

Chris does make a good point. Your opponent acts as though she's making a list of interconnected points, but I lost track of the list somewhere!

She's right, of course, to support Gore's call for energy independence and oil independence.

She's also right to emphasize that we need to have a healthy economy and we don't have one right now. But her idea of a solution there seems to be to stop illegal immigration. How you stop illegal immigration without altering unfair trade deals that create poverty on both sides of the border, especially on the Mexican side, I don't know.
And what makes her theory even worse is that the immigration that has the worst impact on our economy isn't the illegal immigration. It's the legal immigration of skilled labor that takes away high paying jobs from Americans. It's not the illegal dishwashers that hurt our economy as much as the perfectly legal programmers and engineers, etc.!

And then there's the fear mongering. As Franklin pointed out, the only way to be perfectly safe is to give up all liberty, and even then you won't be perfectly safe. We have to accept some risk in life if life is to be worth living. Why is it that people understand this when it comes to economics (far too much, in fact, I think, to the point where many folks seem to think that the economic world should be a dog-eat-dog world), but they don't understand the inevitability of some risk when it comes to potential enemies?

There's a golden rule that applies to international politics that is rarely applied, but not any the less valid because rarely applied. It's the same golden rule we know about in our personal lives - treat others as you would like them to treat you.

Let's take the example of Russia's 'territorial paranoia'. Is it paranoia if they really ARE out to get you?

The US/EU and Nato have poured hundreds of millions of dollars of military aid into countries right on Russia's borders: Ukraine, Georgia, Afganistan, etc.. How would we feel if Russia poured hundreds of millions of dollars of military aide into Cuba? One doesn't have to speculate about that. Russia sold Venezuela some weapons and next thing you know we have a fleet off Venezuela's coast. If Russia gave Cuba military aid proportional to what we've given Georgia (a country half Cuba's population, by the way), let's just say we'd be rippin' mad about it!

Why do we have to have at least 700 bases throughout the world? Why do we have to be the world's biggest weapons supplier? Why do we have to spend more on the military than the rest of the world combined spends? Does having a strong defense really require all that? I don't think so.

Our problem with out of control military spending isn't that we need a strong defense. It's that we THINK we need a strong OFFENSE! How many times do pundits say, as if it were an 11th commandment, that the United States nees to "project power"! Sure we do. Just like we need to 'catapult propaganda'!

chris,

This cloud may have a large silver lining. Look for a response on the same page tomorrow. We are all over this one.

workshop,

The editors were contrite. That does not excuse their poor journalism. The error is beyond the experience of most of us on the campaign staff. Unheard of in reputable newspapers.

I was given a return opportunity. Should be in press on Thursday. We will see.

In some ways the poor writing was enough to tell a tale of KHN herself. I hope lots of people pay attention to the work and understand what the writing represents in terms of a candidate.

I'm glad the editors were contrite and will give you a chance to have your say. That' s good news. Will you publish your piece here as well?

workshop,

As soon as I get the word I will put up the writing here. I can include links to the newspaper at the same time. Just waiting to be sure that is OK.

Thanks.

Now Thursday morning. The paper has printed no correction or retraction and did not publish my reply piece. Now the games continue. Stay tuned. This battle is not yet done.
